Honoring our Essential Workers on Labor Day

On September 6th we will be celebrating Labor Day, and this year Labor Day has a new meaning for many individuals. The U.S. Department of Labor notes that Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. Many individuals look forward to this day because they get that day off, however, for many essential workers this is not the case. Essential workers make up a number of different individuals who are needed on a day to day basis to help take care of the essential needs of us all. Many of these individuals have trouble being able to take time for themselves, and on days like Labor Day, it is imperative we are mindful of those individuals who are contributing much of their time to this work.

Below is a list of some self-care tips for essential workers:

  1. Establish a morning and evening self-care routine.
  2. Get plenty of rest, at least 8 hours a night.
  3. Reflect on 3 things that you are grateful for each day.
  4. Use positive language and self-talk throughout the day.
  5. Take time to speak to a therapist once a week to process your feelings.
  6. Make time for family and friends.
  7. Complete simple tasks first.
  8. Pace yourself and set realistic goals.
