National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month

October is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, and this means that we are working towards bringing more awareness to the needs around depression awareness and the need for accessible and affordable mental health screenings for everyone. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH), major depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States, and can result in one’s ability to take care of oneself and other important task each day. The NIH also notes that in 2017 that an estimated 17.3 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode, and studies show that this number has increased along with other mental health disorders since then as well.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) strongly encourages early mental health screenings because they allow for early identification and intervention of mental health issues that can be detected and treated as early as 11 years of age, and sometimes even younger. According to Mental Health America (MHA) around 22.3% of adults with mental health issues report not being able to receive the treatment they need, and 59% of youth with major depression did not receive any mental health treatment.
