World Mental Health Day

Sunday, October 10th marked the annual World Mental Health Day, which serves as a day for international mental health education, creating awareness of mental disorders, and advocating against the social stigma. The theme for 2021 is “Mental Health in an Unequal World”. According to the World Federation for Mental Health, between 75% to 95% of people with mental disorders in low to middle income nations are unable to access quality mental health care. Globally, access to these resources remains unequal. Considering the deeply rooted stigma against mental health and the lack of access to treatment and other resources, those struggling with a mental illness are essentially left behind. The campaign aims to eliminate this inequality and to promote affordable access to critical care internationally.

So, what does the World Mental Health Day Campaign aim to do every year on October 10? Their biggest goal is to begin a discussion. Prevention of mental illness begins with understanding the warning signs and symptoms of a mental illness. By having open and honest discussions about what mental illness is and how it affects people, we can improve our awareness and eliminate the stigma. Then, we can truly begin to take meaningful steps towards effective change in how we collectively navigate mental health challenges.

The campaign also aims to empower people to take care of their own mental health. What are you currently doing to take care of your mental health and to manage stress in your life? Take time this week to reflect on where you are with your own mental health journey. Advocate for your own needs and take the first steps towards promoting a healthier you.
